Islands of Ambivalence, 2025

Islands of Ambivalence is a work that reimagines the symbolic meaning of wedding dowries and women’s histories during the Cold War. By collaging and stitching together archival materials—including protest posters, bureaucratic photographs, magazine articles, and Mutual Defense Treaty documents—the tapestry visualizes and connects the ambivalent sentiments of many Asian countries toward the presence of U.S. military bases. Through the interweaving of these materials, the work reflects on the gendered power dynamics embedded within this history.
