neon, print, float glass, aluminum, 15.7 " 26" 3.2"
Behind the neon work is a photograph from Time magazine's 1967 Christmas issue, which highlighted the popular destinations for the U.S. military’s "Rest and Recreation" program in Asia. The photograph is an image of a U.S. soldier bathed by two Taiwanese women. I wanted to appropriate this image by juxtaposing an illegible red glass neon scribble on top of this advertisement. While obscuring its message, I also want to highlight the largely forgotten history of sex work in East Asia as funded by USA’s global imperialist ambitions.
Collected by The Glass Museum, Boda glasbruk, Sweden.
