Charge, 2023
video, 3:00 min
Charge is an experimental film that inspired by a 1972 Chiense-English dictionary Lee's parents gave to her before moving to the United States, Lee navigates terms of gender and sexuality through the grey areas in language, the double meanings, the mismatched translations, and the grammatical loopholes.
The film focuses on the protagonists of a reader and a plasma sculpture. As the reader ran their fingers over and licked the glass tubing, the feelings of excitement and timidness transmitted the electricity through the skin. The feeling is akin to finding what a language means by feeling and not by comprehending.
Coined with excerpts from Audre Lorde's speech on "The Uses of the Erotic," the film takes the audience on a journey of seeking the authenticity of womanhood and queerhood.
